Methodology
Source: NASA FIRMS (satellite hotspot detections). Fires are grouped into clusters by geographic proximity; the ranking uses the sum of radiative power (FRP) of all hotspots in the cluster as an intensity indicator. Source data is updated 3-4 times a day.
False-positive filter: clusters with total FRP below 5 MW are not shown. Below that threshold, the false-alarm rate of the VIIRS 375 m product rises noticeably (sun glint over water or reflective surfaces, industrial heat sources, brief agricultural burns), while real vegetation fires typically exceed several tens of MW (Schroeder et al., 2014, Remote Sensing of Environment).
